REVIEW: Gabriel's Inferno by Sylvain Reynard

Series: Gabriel's Inferno #1
Format: Kindle Book
Release Date: April 18, 2011
Publisher:
Source: Self-Purchased
Purchase: Amazon | Barnes & Noble
Enigmatic and sexy, Professor Gabriel Emerson is a well respected Dante specialist by day, but by night he devotes himself to an uninhibited life of pleasure. He uses his notorious good looks and sophisticated charm to gratify his every whim, but is secretly tortured by his dark past and consumed by the profound belief that he is beyond all hope of redemption.

When the sweet and innocent Julia Mitchell enrolls as his graduate student, his attraction and mysterious connection to her not only jeopardizes his career, but sends him on a journey in which his past and his present collide.

An intriguing and sinful exploration of seduction, forbidden love and redemption, “Gabriel's Inferno” is a captivating and wildly passionate tale of one man's escape from his own personal hell as he tries to earn the impossible...forgiveness and love.

GABRIEL'S INFERNO was so spectacularly awesome that I’m not even really quite sure where or how to start this review. I haven't read anything like this in such a long time. It’s a dark, intellectual, emotional, honest, heart-warming and complicated all rolled up into one brilliant romance book. Sylvain Reynard’s intense writing evoked such a range of emotions from me and connectivity to his characters. The story touched upon various subjects that were very reminiscent of classic works of literature. The very title of this book is a nod to Dante Alighieri's 14th-century epic poem Divine Comedy. Paralleled with the classic Italian literature, Gabriel’s Inferno explores the allegory of friendship, lust, love, forgiveness and redemption. It’s not often that a romance author has me thinking about metaphors or researching works of art or literature. I had to open up that vault in my brain that stored all the classic art and literature information that I had learned years ago.

“Sometimes goodness doesn't tell everything it knows. Sometimes goodness waits for the appropriate time and does the best it can with what it has.”

GABRIEL'S INFERNO begins with Julianne ‘Julia’ Mitchell on her first day of graduate school at the University of Toronto. She is one of Professor Gabriel O. Emerson’s students in his Dante’s Inferno seminar. She’d gone to the school to learn from one of the world’s “Dante Specialist” and her reasons for going to the school isn’t totally based on her academic career. Julia has been unrequitedly in love with Gabriel ever since she was sixteen years old after her best friend show’s Julia a picture of Gabriel, who happens to be her decade older brother. Even after they’d spend a “moment” together six years prior, Gabriel is unable to recognize Julia. From the instant they meet again he is nothing but rude and disrespectful, which even brought tears to my eyes. After a tumultuous start, Gabriel finally realizes their connection and that’s when their intense, tumultuous, forbidden, and secret student / professor relationship begins.

“Bad things happen to everyone. Not that this was an excuse or a justification for wronging another human being. Still, all humans had this shared experience — that of suffering. No human being left this world without shedding a tear, or feeling pain, or wading into the sea of sorrow.”

At the beginning, Julia was an unlikable character for me. She was skittish and I couldn’t get over her annoying habit of lip biting, stuttering and fumbling around. I seriously was thinking maybe this girl needed to be on some kind of medication. But as her past and secrets are revealed I became a little more sympathetic and understanding of her character. She comes from a broken home and her parents showed very little or no ounce of love for her. After seeing how the people who were supposed to love and protect her failed, it was clear as to why she lacked a sense of self-worth. Being involved in an abusive relationship during her undergraduate years didn't help with her already flailing sense of self-worth.

“Look at me. Look into my eyes." His eyes fixed on hers as they fluttered open. "I'll give you anything. My body, my soul, Take them. Take everything.”

Gabriel is a very perplexed character. He comes off as very rude, brash, obtuse and insolent. He suffers from serious anger management issues and I was concerned as to how I would eventually fall for him as the male lead. Gabriel is riddled with his own dark past and personal demons. He’s unable to forgive himself for sins he committed in his past be believes that he’s unredeemable. I seriously was thinking maybe he'd been a murderer or serial killer, that's how set he was in his own damnation. Like Julia, I couldn't comprehend Gabriel’s struggles until he finally confesses the sins he's committed. Gabriel’s dark past is as heartbreaking as Julia’s and the path they both take to learn about redemption and forgiveness is not an easy road.

“When I am an old man and I can remember nothing else, I will remember this moment. The first time my eyes beheld an angel in the flesh. I will remember your body and your eyes, your beautiful face and breasts, your curves and this.” He traced his hand around her navel before dragging it lightly to the top of her lower curls. “I will remember your scent and your touch and how it felt to love you. But most of all, I will remember how it felt to gaze at true beauty, both inside and out. For you are fair, my beloved, in soul and in body, generous of spirit and generous of heart. And I will never see anything this side of heaven more beautiful than you”

The romance between Gabriel and Julia is intense and unhealthy. In reality I would not stand being in that sort of relationship myself but I live for it in my books. Reading about their relationship was so addictive. Gabriel is more than experienced in the bedroom and when he has sex, he likes for it to be hard, fast and intense. On the other hand Julia is still a virgin and it's her pureness that really attracts Gabriel to her. But since Julia is still a student of Gabriel's, they abstain from having any sort of sexual relationship until the end of the semester. Both are aware of the repercussions if they were ever caught to they keep the relationship as PG as possible. Although there wasn't any sex till the very end, Gabriel's Inferno was still sensual. Throughout the book Gabriel seduces Julia with his words and make out sessions. If you know me, you know that I love me some sex scenes but this book still kept me satisfied. When these two do finally consummate their love it was scorching hot and made me wish Gabriel Emerson had taken my virginity. It was hot!

GABRIEL'S INFERNO is a story about two broken souls that meet, learn how to love and forgive. I found myself laughing, crying and learning with them. As each try to find their way through their personal hell, you end up growing with the characters. The romance was intense and the depth of emotions it goes to is something fairly uncommon in a typical contemporary romance. At 506 pages, it’s not a book you can read in one sitting but with patience and time, Reynard will suck you into the lives of Gabriel Emerson and Julia Mitchell. Gabriel's Inferno is not only gripping but thought provoking and I was more than happy to walk through the fires of Julia and Gabriel's own personal hell and end up in their own version of paradise.

Gabriel Emerson has some pretty good choices in music and this is one of the songs he plays for Julia which I loved. This was already an awesome song in my opinion before I read Gabriel's Inferno but after it's used in one of the scenes's it's taken a whole new meaning for me. Not only is Gabriel intense, smart and seductive, he's also got great taste in music. Makes me love him even more.

Review: Phantom of the Night by Sherrilyn Kenyon w/ Dianna Love

Series: B.A.D. 2
Format: Paperback (borrowed from the Library)
Excerpt here
Release Date: June 10, 2008
Purchase: Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Book Depository
After losing her mother to a vigilante killer, Terri Mitchell has dedicated her life to justice. Working covertly as a new agent for the Bureau of American Defense agency, she's consulting with the New Orleans Police Department to bust an organized crime ring suspected of funding terrorism. But when rumors surface of a phantom ghost terrorizing and killing the very people she's investigating, she's suspicious.

Nathan Drake has spent his life protecting his family, the only thing that matters to him...until the most feared drug lord in the southeast takes everything Nathan holds dear. Now he's a man on a mission with nothing to lose. He figures he only needs to stay alive long enough to protect the innocent lives the killers are out to destroy.

As the two of them seek a similar goal by different means, Terri and Nathan are drawn deep into an evil underbelly that cuts through all levels of society. Now two people who have no reason to trust must trust in each other or die. And if they die, a deadly attack will be unleashed on thousands of innocent people.
PHANTOM OF THE NIGHT is about familial love and sacrifice, cover ups, fraud and revenge. Here Sherrilyn Kenyon and Dianna Love weaves a tale about a man who will stop at nothing to uncover who betrayed his brother that cost the latter's life and his freedom.

I miss reading Sherrilyn Kenyon as IMHO, she is one of the best writers of male POV stories. I am a big Dark-Hunter fan and if you haven't had the pleasure of reading any of her books let me tell you that SKenyon has a Bachelor's Degree in Sexy and Engaging Characters and a Master's Degree on Tortured Souls. This girl is relentless when it comes to writing up tragedies and triumph, his men are marshmallows on the inside and hard candy on the outside.
I've been up for close to twenty hours and have a hard time believing those deodorant commercials are true. -Terri
No, you smell natural and real. You smell the way a woman should. - Nathan
And Nathan Drake is no different, he is all male and brawny, a soldier who is loyal to a fault with incomparable skills both in the field and in the bedroom. But his family's loss made him blind to his anger and his only mission is to live long enough to solve the mystery surrounding his twin brother's death. Terri Mitchell is a wonderful accessory to Nathan Drake, though injured she didn't seem to hamper the viglante's personal investigation. She's smart and a competent consort to Nathan albeit working for the opposite sides of the law but a common goal and fierce attraction brought them together.
And maybe fat fairies ate the rest of your blouse, which explains why so much of it's missing.
But in spite of all these elements that I usually look for in a book, I didn't enjoy PHANTOM OF THE NIGHT as much as SKenyon's other books. I love a good conspiracy story and Nathan Drake's story is oozing with it as PHANTOM OF THE NIGHT is a mystery within a mystery, there is a puzzle uncovered every chapter but I didn't feel the connection between Nathan and Terri. I found the intermediate investigation lengthy, I could certainly do away with some parts, and the secondary characters were a little flat for my taste. Nathan and Terri didn't excite me as a couple and on the first part of the book, Nathan felt stalkerish to me, stealing into Terri's bedroom and house in the middle of the night while the latter entertains/questions him which is contradictory to Terri's character as a law enforcement agent.

So inasmuch as I love SKenyon and her writing, I won't be in a hurry to read the next book in the series.

This Week's Question
Birthday Wishes - Blow out the candles and imagine what character could pop out of your cake…who is it and what book are they from??
Answer: Well since this is my birthday wish and I can wish for whatever I want I'll be a little greedy and ask for the following book hunks to pop out of my birthday cake: Jericho Barrons (Fever series by Karen Marie Moning), Bones (Night Huntress series by Jeaniene Frost), Gideon Cross (Crossfire series by Sylvia Day), Christian Grey (Fifty Shades series by EL James) and Adam Hauptman (Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs).

I'm guessing the cake would be the size of a house because a normal cake where a man could pop out of would not be able to hold all that super Alpha male testosterone.

Dirty Little Secret #17

Dirty Little Secret is a weekly meme hosted by Under the Covers. Every Thursday they get to know other bloggers and readers more intimately by asking them a question hoping to reveal their dirty little secrets.
This Week's Question
Half the year has gone by already! Tell us your favorite books so far!
Braine
I've been fortunate enough to have read several good ones this year but these are topping my list:
  • Bared to You by Sylvia Day
  • City of Ghosts by Stacia Kane
  • Lover Reborn by J.R. Ward
  • Vampire Shift by Tim O'Rourke
  • Hunting Ground by Patricia Briggs
  • Clockwork Prince by Cassandra Clare
  • Blackbirds by Chuck Wendig
Cimmaron
Oddly enough the books that have resonated with me so far in 2012 are contemporary romance books. I finally started some great PNR or UF series this year that I've been wanting to read for a long time but these books are ones that I can't stop thinking about or recommend to others quite often.
  • Bared to You by Sylvia Day
  • On the Island by Tracey Garvis Graves
  • Gabriel's Inferno by Sylvain Reynard
  • Fifty Shades of Grey Trilogy
  • Halfway to the Grave by Jeaniene Frost
  • Slammed by Colleen Hoover

Now that we've shared our Dirty Little Secret with you, what's yours?

Angels vs Demons Giveaway (US)

Welcome to our hop!

Angels vs Demons blog hop is hosted by

Some of the most interesting stories are about Angels or Demons and lately Fallen Angels seem to be the hot topic in current UF/PNR books. The tragedy surrounding an Angel's fall puts the hero/heroine in a very vulnerable and defensive position which makes following their stories spellbinding. Plus the FORBIDDEN stamp on these creatures doesn't make them off-limits, if anything it makes possessing them challenging and seductive.

So to honor this heavenly creatures,
we are giving away a book of your choice from J.R. Ward's Fallen Angels Series
especially since the third book,
is a RITA 2012 finalist under the paranormal romance category.
This contest is open for US residents only.
Please make sure that you are a GFC follower for your entry to qualify.
Winner will be notified via email not later than July 2.
We will NOT be responsible for incorrect email addresses so make sure you leave the proper one.
Winner has 48 hours to acknowledge said email otherwise another name will be picked.

Good luck and happy hopping!

Early Review: God Save the Queen by Kate Locke

Series: The Immortal Empire 1
Format: ARC (NetGalley)
Excerpt here
Release Date: July 3, 2012
Purchase Links: Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Book Depository
The undead matriarch of a Britain where the Aristocracy is made up of werewolves and vampires, where goblins live underground and mothers know better than to let their children out after dark. A world where being nobility means being infected with the Plague (side-effects include undeath), Hysteria is the popular affliction of the day, and leeches are considered a delicacy. And a world where technology lives side by side with magic. The year is 2012 and Pax Britannia still reigns.

Xandra Vardan is a member of the elite Royal Guard, and it is her duty to protect the Aristocracy. But when her sister goes missing, Xandra will set out on a path that undermines everything she believed in and uncover a conspiracy that threatens to topple the empire. And she is the key-the prize in a very dangerous struggle
GOD SAVE THE QUEEN is an arresting first book to Kate Locke's incredible and unconventional new Steampunk series. From the world building to the Gothic-chic fashion down to the mysteries unlocked, KLocke is relentless and aims to keep you in your seat until you're done with the story. Here she's created a world where vampires and werewolves are the heads of state, Queen Victoria herself is on the 175th year of her reign, but far from sterile these immortal aristocrats have taken procreation down to a science. Goblins too join in the mix, living side by side their plagued relatives, they are the abominable result of mutation carrying both vampire and werewolf genes. These Goblins are predators, feral and terrifying to behold and feared by everyone. They are society's outcasts but though outranked and outclassed, they have a Royal Prince to rule over them and keep them in check. The humans are both prey and protected but powerless over their supernatural counterparts.
Goblins looked a lot like werewolves, only shorter and smaller - wiry. Their faces were a disconcerting mix of canine and humanoid - exactly what you might expect from a walking nightmare [digested].
Alexandra "Xandra" Vardan is a very engrossing heroine, she's loyal to her family, has excellent fashion sense, competent in handling munition and possess keen senses that not even wearing pointy-toed, hourglass-heeled boots can hamper her arse kicking fighting skills. She reveres her father to a fault, seeking his empathy and approval and though she is a middle child, her stubbornness and determination eclipse that of her older brother, Val, earning her the respect of her siblings, Dede and Avery. She IS the mystery of the story, I won't divulge more to avoid spoilers but GOD SAVE THE QUEEN is a pivoting moment for Xandra; betrayed by a man she trusts, beliefs capsized and basically going through major purging. The coming books hold a promise of many more obstacles to come, passionate lovemaking and tearful heartbreaks.
I'd always been a sucker for a boy with fur. And the MacLaughlin, as he was known, was no boy.
Vex MacLaughlin, the Scottish Alpha who exudes male and sex and everything you imagine a Scottish werewolf to be, is Xandra's boyfriend. I feel KLocke too was at a lost for words in describing how impressive this man is because she sure did disappointingly skimped on some important details that would've fired up my imagination! In any case, KLocke made it very hard not to love this guy, he's protective of Xandra but he lets her be herself, it's hard NOT to want to be around this guy. Just imagining him talking with an accent, with those crispy consonants and his hard male body is enough to make me swoon! I can almost smell him and in my head he smells like  the forest, musky with a hint of sandalwood and pine. But aside from the ample background given, there's a lot to be discovered about Vex, he is a quiet force that's waiting to be unleashed and my gut is telling me that he will be doing his own brand of mayhem further on in the story.
Can I take you home? Vex to Xandra
Only if you come inside,
Make no mistake, I plan to come inside.
GOD SAVE THE QUEEN by Kate Locke (aka Kathryn Smith, Kady Cross, Kate Cross) hit the spot in the right places as far as I'm concerned. The conspiracies KLocke wove into the story were gripping and the way it unfolded left my mouth hanging open in some parts. Xandra's modern family, with siblings shooting from different branches, is interesting and a little challenging to keep up with, The Duke of Vardan and the rest of the ton sure took procreation to heart. However due to the shocking turn of events I feel Xandra's hero worship over her father is coming to a close and her close relationship with her siblings will be put to the test which I'm sure will be dealt with in book two, The Queen is Dead.

As for the conflict-resolution, GOD SAVE THE (Ice)QUEEN's was just but cold. It was a little expected but what I didn't predict was HOW justice will be doled out to the villain. Still, it was a fitting end to a treacherous villain but the events that led to it were heartbreaking and will make even a strong girl like Xandra unravel a little bit.

So if you're into Steampunk, better add this to your library, you won't be disappointed.

October 2, 2012
Gideon Cross. As beautiful and flawless on the outside as he was damaged and tormented on the inside. He was a bright, scorching flame that singed me with the darkest of pleasures. I couldn't stay away. I didn't want to. He was my addiction... my every desire... mine.

My past was as violent as his, and I was just as broken. We'd never work. It was too hard, too painful... except when it was perfect. Those moments when the driving hunger and desperate love were the most exquisite insanity.

We were bound by our need. And our passion would take us beyond our limits to the sweetest, sharpest edge of obsession…
All I have to say about this book is
SQUUUUEEEEEEEE! Gimme some more of Gideon Cross. Please!

Ash and Meghan's last story!!

Meghan Chase is finally getting used to being the Iron Queen, ruler of the Iron Fey. Her life may be strange, but with former Winter prince Ash by her side at last, she wouldn’t have it any other way.

But when they travel to the Summer and Winter courts’ gathering for Elysium, the oracle from Meghan’s past returns with a dire prophecy: “What you carry will either unite the courts, or it will destroy them.” Now Meghan faces a devastating choice that may determine the future of all fey—and her and Ash’s unborn child….

Letter from Julie Kagawa:
Dear readers:
This is Meghan and Ash's last story, an e-novella that takes place after The Iron Knight and before The Lost Prince. It will be available online (release date to-be-announced) and as part of The Iron Legends Anthology coming this fall.
One last adventure.
And the answer to the question: will Meghan and Ash finally get their happily ever after?
--Julie
So sad that this will be Ash & Meghan's last story. Ash & Meghan's unborn child?!?! OMFG! CAN.NOT.WAIT!! I really ended up loving this couple and they were just so very sweet together. I can't believe that I am actually gushing about a YA series but I loved Kagawa's Iron Fey books. Her world building was amazing and I always felt like I was walking around in the fae world with Meghan, Ash & Puck. As much as I hate seeing a series end I think it's time we move on to find out that sort of troubles Meghan's little brother will be getting into.

Iron's Prophecy will be included in The Iron Legends novella anthology that will be released later this year.

Pre-order The Iron Legends Anthology which includes
WInter's Passage, Summer's Crossing & Iron's Prophecy

REVIEW: Lucifer's Daughter by Eve Langlais

Series: Princess of Hell #1
Format: Kindle Book
Release Date: August 9, 2010
My Copy: Self-Purchased
Purchase Links: Amazon | Barnes & Noble
Being Lucifer’s daughter can be hell.

Hi, I’m Muriel, the only white sheep in a sea of black ones, and a virgin to boot. I am determined to wait for love, but my dad, more commonly known as Lucifer, just wants me to stop being an embarrassment. I’m hoping the hunk that I met in my bar will turn out to be the one–just looking at him makes my insides melt like marshmallows over the coals of hell, but trusting is hard when it seems everyone I get close to ends up trying to kill me.

Not only am I dealing with an extreme case of lust, there’s a new threat in hell, one my dad says to ignore. Something easier said than done since it seems everywhere I turn demons are trying to kill me. But I’m okay with that, because one thing I’ve learned being a princess of hell is that sometimes I have to grab a demon by the horns and slap it around a bit.

A rebellion in hell, demon assassins and scorching kisses, could my life get any more interesting?
I want to start off by thanking Amber I. of Awesomesauce Book Club for introducing me to this wonderful novella series. If I hadn’t read her review of Snowballs in Hell I would have never found out about Eve Langlais Princess of Hell series. Lucifer’s Daughter was a fast paced laugh riot and a charismatic father - daughter duo that are quite unforgettable.

"…you’re not following through with vile acts. You’re making me look like a bad parent."

Santana Muriel Baphomet is literally the spawn of the Devil. She’s one of Lucifer’s multiple bastard children but unlike her half-siblings, Muriel is not sinful enough to match her father’s standards or expectations. He grumbles about his minions in Hell laughing at him and that rumors are flying around that he is no longer fit to be the Father Of All Sin because he can’t control his own daughter. She was a straight A student, the good apple in a sea of bad ones and is still a virgin at 23. Lucifer even begs for her to be more like her succubus half-sisters but Muriel is adamant about not giving up her virginity until she falls in love. But she’s not all the innocent because she has no problems of pleasuring herself when in need of a release.

"I don’t know why, but I’m attached to you, too,” Satan said grumpily, hugging me back. I cherished moments like that; they tended to be few and far between. “Try to be bad,” he said, before popping out of sight."

This mismatched father – daughter duo is what really sold me on to the series. I loved how Satan was a frustrated daddy begging his daughter to go out and be sinister and promiscuous. But as much as he grumbled about Muriel not being vile enough it’s clear to the reader that he cares deeply for his daughter. It just goes to prove that just because he’s the Devil doesn’t mean he can’t care for his own children even though he’s got the oddest way of showing it. As for Muriel, she’s exactly the kind of daughter I would want Lucifer to have. She goes against everything her father wants or tells her to do but cares deeply for her dad and her family. She’s sassy, sarcastic, amusing, tenacious and independent. She may be a virgin but she’s no prude. Muriel was a fantastic heroine and as Lucifer’s daughter she wasn’t the damsel in distress kind of girl and she was more than able to defend herself with the magical powers she was born with.

As for the hero, Auric, he was a fantastic match for Muriel. He’s tall, dark, brooding and more than able to protect Muriel when needed. His identity is clouded at the beginning but when we find out who or what he is it wasn’t all that surprising. I liked that fact that he did not back down once he learns Muriel is the daughter of Lucifer and even stood up to the Devil himself when it came to Muriel’s safety and well-being. If the novella was a little longer I would have preferred Muriel and Auric’s relationship to progress in a more natural way but the fact that these two were horny for each other right from the start it wasn’t a surprise they’d jump in the sack that quickly. Langlais wrote a steaming sex scene and I only wished the book was a bit longer so we could get more of Muriel and Auric in the sac.

The story itself was a bit predictable (at least for me) but it was very well written and I loved the relationships Langlais has created with her characters. I liked the aspect of the villains trying to over throw the devil. I mean other than God, who else is crazy or brave enough to go against Lucifer and his army of demons? Definitely waiting to find out who's behind all this. For paranormal lovers who are looking for something a little bit different from your standard vampire, werewolf or demon tales, then I would definitely recommend the Princess of Hell series. It’s a fun, fast and witty read. You can’t help but like the characters, especially the Devil himself. I mean seriously, for me to say that I liked the Devil in this story says a lot about what a fantastic story the author has created.

Review: City of Ghosts by Stacia Kane

IT’S A THIN LINE BETWEEN ALIVE AND UNDEAD.

Chess Putnam has a lot on her plate. Mangled human corpses have started to show up on the streets of Downside, and Chess’s bosses at the Church of Real Truth have ordered her to team up with the ultra-powerful Black Squad agency to crack the grisly case.

Chess is under a binding spell that threatens death if she talks about the investigation, but the city’s most notorious crime boss—and Chess’s drug dealer—gets wind of her new assignment and insists on being kept informed. If that isn’t bad enough, a sinister street vendor appears to have information Chess needs. Only he’s not telling what he knows, or what it all has to do with the vast underground City of Eternity.

Now Chess will have to navigate killer wraiths, First Elders, and a lot of seriously nasty magic—all while coping with some not-so-small issues of her own. And the only man Chess can trust to help her through it all has every reason to want her dead.

After reading, Finding Magic, Unholy Ghosts and Unholy Magic, I still wasn't crazy in love with the series like some of you. Don't get me wrong, the alternate world Stacia Kane created is both wonderful and foreboding; ghost haunting left and right, witches running around under the edict of The Church, it's Salem's nightmare come to life. Downside Ghosts is a modern ghost story with very addicting characters with layers of drama and the supernatural so interspersed one can't help but get invested in it. But it wasn't until CITY OF GHOSTS that I finally understood the WHY's (it's so addicting) and WHAT's (the worship about) of the series. The words were leaping off the pages for me and the visuals that SKane kept on throwing are so vivid, I was having a kick ass Halloween party in my head the entire time!

After reading CITY OF GHOSTS I decided that being a Debunker isn't as exciting as I made it up to be, these creatures that Chess and The Church deals with are like famished Dementors, these ghosts are too adamant for a proton pack to expel not to mention necromancers and black magic joining the mix, no wonder Chess is a junkie. If I were in her shoes, I don't think Bump or The Asians can medicate me enough to function let alone be a mediocre Debunker in the face of adversity. And it's not just enemy that creeps me out, even The First Elders of The Church are scary in their own right, they're like Nazguls with their imposing powers and appearances.
Ain't talking this shit with you, dig? Why the fuck you keep askin?
Because I want to help you. If ---
Don't need your fucking help.
Chess and Terrible: These two are angsty and passionate for each other in equal parts whether it's in a fight, in lust or in love. The love-hate, push-pull that I've witnessed the past two books is starting to make me antsy because it reached a pinnacle and it either goes down or explode like fireworks. CITY OF GHOSTS is where this aspect of the story finally had its crescendo, a bump in the tunnels and sealed in a dirty bar bathroom. Not exactly romantic but the emotions and events leading to that made it so in my book. Although I feel afraid for Chess, Terrible really said a lot of nasty things to her not only meant to hurt her feelings but burn a hole in her heart. I have a feeling Chess' heartached of Terrible and his mutton chops is far from over. His name isn't Terrible for nothing right? But in any case, I'll take it where I can so like Chess, I'm basking in Terrible's love for Chess right now.
Talk? Why? Got more lies to give me?... making me sick bein in the same room as you. Dig?
Cesaria Putnam: I really don't know how you stay lucid when you pop those pills like Tic-Tacs. The Binding Ceremony was both beautiful and painful and I don't know how Chess survived the whole thing much less stay coherent. But CITY OF GHOSTS story is my favorite amongst Chess' adventures so far, she was such a badass in this one especially the magic she pulled in the end! It was so breathtaking and I felt the rush of emotions SKane was projecting: fear, relief, courage, worry and power. For that much magic coming out of Chess' skinny frame was EPIC to witness!

So CITY OF GHOST was/is legendary! I still have a novella and two more books to go but reading the reviews it looks like SKane won't be giving me a break, I believe she plans to take me to further heights with Sacrificial Magic and Chasing Magic, the latter being released today.

The troubled but sensual saga of Gideon Cross and Eva Tramell continues in Sylvia Day's Crossfire series with book #2
Deeper into You

When Vlad and Leila meet, however, passion ignites between them, threatening to consume them both. It will take everything that they are to stop an enemy intent on bringing them down in flames.

Leader of the most powerful army in the heavens, Zacharel has been deemed nearly too dangerous, too ruthless--and if he isn't careful, he'll lose his wings. But this warrior with a heart of ice will not be deterred from his missions at any cost...until a vulnerable human tempts him with a carnal pleasure he's never known before.

Accused of a crime she did not commit, Annabelle Miller has spent four years in an institution for the criminally insane. Demons track her every move, and their king will stop at nothing to have her. Zacharel is her only hope for survival, but is the brutal angel with a touch as hot as hell her salvation--or her ultimate damnation?

A DEADLY HIGH

Magic-wielding Churchwitch and secret addict Chess Putnam knows better than anyone just how high a price people are willing to pay for a chemical rush. But when someone with money to burn and a penchant for black magic starts tampering with Downside’s drug supply, Chess realizes that the unlucky customers are paying with their souls—and taking the innocent with them, as the magic-infused speed compels them to kill in the most gruesome ways possible.

As if the streets weren’t scary enough, the looming war between the two men in her life explodes, taking even more casualties and putting Chess squarely in the middle. Downside could become a literal ghost town if Chess doesn’t find a way to stop both the war and the dark wave of death-magic, and the only way to do that is to use both her addiction and her power to enter the spell and chase the magic all the way back to its malevolent source. Too bad that doing so will probably kill Chess—if the war doesn’t first destroy the man who’s become her reason for living.

A LITTLE BIT OF ANGEL LUST.

Sammael – call him Sam – was an angel once. An angel of death. But the dispassionate, watch-from-above thing just wasn’t working for him when it meant watching evil torture innocent souls day in and day out. It might have cost him his wings, but these days, he gets to apply the direct method on the bad guys. Problem is, what’s making his life difficult is a bad girl…

Seline O’Shaw needs protection, and with the hounds of hell on her tail, she’s not going to quibble too hard about where she gets it. Sam’s virtue is questionable, but he’s smoking hot, massively powerful, and owes her a favor. So what if she’s getting a little case of angel lust? There are some damn deadly sins after her hide...

My name is Cherry St. Croix. Society would claim that I am a well-heeled miss with an unfortunate familial reputation. They've no idea of the truth of it. In my secret world, I hunt down vagrants, thieves . . . and now, a murderer. For a monster stalks London's streets, leaving a trail of mystery and murder below the fog.

Eager for coin to fuel my infatuations, I must decide where my attentions will turn: to my daylight world, where my scientific mind sets me apart from respectable Society, or to the compelling domain of London below. Each has a man who has claimed my time as his--for good or for ill. Though as the corpses pile, and the treacherous waters of Society gossip churn, I am learning that each also has its dangers. One choice will see me cast from polite company . . . the other might just see me dead.

And even though she's tempted to kiss that sexy smile right off his face, she won't make the mistake of getting involved with the town heartthrob.

A former cop whose life went south, Matt doesn't let anyone get too close. But something about the feisty beauty caught his eye the moment he first saw her in the diner. After a hot night under a starry sky, Matt can't deny their attraction-or the fact that for the first time in a long time, he feels the stirrings of something more. Now it's up to Matt to help Amy see that, no matter what is in their past, together they can build a future in Lucky Harbor.
I've yet to start Jill Shalvis' Lucky Harbor series but I have heard nothing but great things about this series. I have the first two on the top of my TBR pile and will be dusting them off soon so I can get them read this summer. - Cimmaron
