Sometimes discovering the truth can leave you more hopeless than believing the lies…
That’s what seventeen-year-old Sky realizes after she meets Dean Holder. A guy with a reputation that rivals her own and an uncanny ability to invoke feelings in her she’s never had before. He terrifies her and captivates her all in the span of just one encounter, and something about the way he makes her feel sparks buried memories from a past that she wishes could just stay buried.
Sky struggles to keep him at a distance knowing he’s nothing but trouble, but Holder insists on learning everything about her. After finally caving to his unwavering pursuit, Sky soon finds that Holder isn’t at all who he’s been claiming to be. When the secrets he’s been keeping are finally revealed, every single facet of Sky’s life will change forever.
Once again Colleen Hoover has left me standing under a puddle of tears. I'm not even ashamed of the fact that some folks saw me ugly crying while reading this book. I was so swept away by the devestatingly beautiful story that is Hopeless. Hopeless is about so many things like love, friendship, family secrets, betrayal, survival, regrets, forgiveness, courage, and last but not least, hope. It was beautiful, heart-wrenching, devastating, and inspiring. Hopeless was everything I wanted from a Colleen Hoover novel and so much more!
"Not everything is going to go my way and not everyone gets happily ever afters. Life is real and sometimes it's ugly and you just have to learn how to cope."
The synopsis of Hopeless is a little vague and I really don't want to reveal too many things. You definitely don't want to read any of the spoilers. Hopeless is a story that you will have to experience for yourself. The story mainly focuses on 17-year-old Sky Davis. As far as YA heroines go, Sky is one that I loved from the get go. She had her emo tendencies but what I really appreciated about her was her absolute bluntness, no tolerance for drama, and odd sense of humor. On the cusps of her 18th birthday, Sky slowly starts to unravel things about her past that she's suppressed for the last thirteen years. There are certain feelings that Sky has never been able to feel in the past and the reasoning behind it had always been a mystery to her, that is until she meets Dean Holder. She's instantly awestruck by him and could not understand her instant attraction to the guy as she's never felt anything for the guys she's dated in the past. As Sky slowly starts to get to know Holder, she starts feeling things and pieces about her past slowly start to unravel. Sky literally starts to learn things about herself once she's involved with Holder. The journey Sky takes to learn everything about her is emotional and deeply heart-wrenching. But as painful as things got, as a reader, I was so inspired to see Sky find out just how brave and couragous she really is.
Just like he did with Sky, Holder slowly stole pieces of my heart. When you first meet Holder you immediately get beautiful, tatted, bad boy persona. But as Sky slowly gets to know Holder, you realize he is nothing like what you first perceived about him. There are so many facets of Holder from the intense, crazy, and volatile and to the more surprising ones like kind, loving, and passionate. I was so glad that Colleen had made Holder 18-years-old because I would have felt like a total creepster swooning over him. But that is what I did exactly because for a young man of 18 years old, Holder just had a way with words that not only stole Sky's heart but min also. Here's an example of some of the things that came out of Holder's mouth that makes him totally swoon worthy:
"Sky I'm not kissing you tonight but believe me when I tell you, I've never wanted to kiss a girl more. So stop thinking I'm not attracted to you because you have no idea just how much I am. You can hold my hand, you can run your fingers through my hair, you can straddle me while I fee you spaghetti, but you are not getting kissed tonight. And probably not tomorrow, either. I need this. I need you to know for sure you're feeling every single thing that I'm feeling the moment my lips touch yours. Because I want your first kiss to be the best first kiss in the history of first kisses."
Is that not just the sweetest thing you've ever heard?! If I was Sky's age again and some hottie uttered those words to me genuinely, I probably would have melted into a puddle of goo. I'm totally going on a tangent and fangerling over Holder but that young man was just so lovable. I loved watching him be Sky's rock when it seemed like her her world was just crumbling around her. Even with all the heavy baggage and burden that he carried around, I was just absolutely amazed by his solid support of Sky. If there is one YA hero worthy of your swoon it definitely should go to Holder.
You will absolutely love watching Sky and Holder slowly fall in love with each other. Not only did they compliment each other but you just witnessed how perfectly well they fit. I'm not always a believer of two people destined to be with each other but Sky and Holder definitely did belong with each other. The sleuth in me always tries to figure out the mystery in the story before it's revealed and I definitely had my theories throughout this book. But Colleen did a wonderful job unraveling all the secrets in Sky and Holder's life that kept me on the edge of my seat. I was right there with Sky and Holder as they went through the highs, lows, and some of the darkest secrets they've been suppressing. Like I said at the beginning there were moments when I was literally crying especially when the most emotional and darkest secrets are unraveled. Just like with Colleens past books, Hopeless is emotionally charged and she will bring out some of the strongest emotions out of you. It is literally impossible to read a Colleen Hoover book and you not be affected.
"The sky is always beautiful. Even when it's dark or rainy or cloudy,it's still beautiful to look at. It' s my favorite thing because I know if I ever get lost or lonely or scared, I just have to look up and it'll be there no matter what…and I know it'll always be beautiful." - Holder
I absolutely cannot wait till Hopeless comes out on paperback. Hopeless will be going right up on my top favorites shelf sitting right next to Colleen's other wonderful books, Slammed and Point of Retreat. I know I say this about a lot of books that I read but if there is one book you need to read, it would have to be Hopeless. You'll be amazed by how much Sky and Holder affect you and how much you learn about friendship, love, courage, and hope from these two young and beautiful characters. Colleen Hoover just has a way with her words that will engrain themselves in your hearts and your minds and will stay with you forever. I can't say any more about this book except for you must read it!
