Answer: It's been a while since I picked up a book that wasn't in my norm so this was a pretty hard question to answer. After some thinking I remembered a book I'd picked up that was out of my norm and ended up liking. This Week's QuestionJumping Genres: Ever pick up a book from a genre you usually don't like and LOVE it? Tell us about it and why you picked it up in the first place.
I picked up this book a few years ago after my boss at the current time was reading and raving about it. He was just so convincing that I ended up picking up a copy just so I could see what the hell he was talking about. The Kite Runner tells the story of Amir, an Afghan boy that comes from a fairly well off family then flees Afghanistan with his father after the Soviets invade their home country. The book then goes on to tell the story of Amir's life in the US, his career as a novelist and how he meets his wife. After his father dies from cancer Amir is called on by an old family friend to go to Pakistan and eventually back to Afghanistan.
It took me a while to warm up to this book but once it got going I couldn't put it down. It was highly emotional and I did find myself crying over a few parts. Books like the Kite Runner makes things going on around the world a little more real. Although the book starts out during a time I wasn't familiar with after watching and reading the news you have a little understanding as to what sort of situation Amir and his friends and family lived through. The Kite Runner is placed in a category I like to refer to as "Real Life Shit" because it deals with complex characters, situations that make you think hard and tells the tale of humanity, loyalty, family and friendship. It's the type of book that make you laugh, cry and cheer on with the characters and leaves you actually giving a damn about the lives of these people and everyone around them.

Happy Feature & Follow Friday!

Hopping through. I loved The Kite Runner, but I've read a lot of books about Afghanistan so I'm familiar with the type. Have you read A Thousand Splendid Suns? It's even better.

I haven't read The Kite Runner but if it envokes that kind of emotion I will definitely get it.

I've heard really great things about Kite Runner, but I still haven't read it. I guess it can sometimes be a good thing to try something you wouldn't normally be interested in. :)

omg I cried my eyes out when I read that book. And A thousand splendid suns! I totally agree that it's "real life shit". for the longest time I thought it was a biography, but it wasn't, because it was soo freaking real and depressing. Yeah, I was depressed for weeks after that book but I totally don't regret reading it!

ReplyDeleteThis is a book I heard a lot of things about it, but it's not catching my attention. Perhaps this is some book I should try, just to see ^^
